Whenever we think about a "girls' night," there is a certain image that comes to mind. We tend to have visions of women clutching glasses of pinot grigio on the couch, toes prepping for pedicures, all while allowing a gooey green mask to harden on their face. Many ladies have a love of self-pampering, but too few know that there are things in their kitchen that they can use (and eat!) to get that natural, glamorous glow.

One of the most versatile ways to get a better look is none other than the avocado. This green superfood is meant for more than a few good bowls of guacamole. Avocados are packed with nutrients, with nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, and include a high percentage of the daily value for many of them. Aside from giving us a ton of healthy, fortifying goods to keep us on the right dietary track, avocados can be eaten and used as a part of your daily routine to revitalize your look.

The Creatively You Design Competition launches Friday, May 21, 2021 and will be accepting submissions through Monday, June 7, 2021.


Who Should Apply: Women-identifying graphic designers and illustrators. (Due to medium limitations, we're not currently accepting design submissions from photographers or painters.)

What We're Looking For: Digital print and pattern designs that reflect your design aesthetic. Think optimistic, hopeful, bright — something you'd want to see inside your home.

How To Enter: Apply here, where you'll be asked to submit 2x original design files you own the rights to for consideration. Acceptable file formats include: .PNG, .JPG, .GIF, .SVG, .PSD, and .TIFF. Max file size 5GB. We'll also ask about your design inspiration and your personal info so we can keep in touch.

Artist Selection Process: Panelists from Brit + Co and P&G Bounty's creative teams will judge the submissions and select 50 finalists on June 11, 2021 who will receive a Selfmade scholarship for our summer 2021 session. Then, up to 8 artists will be selected from the finalists and notified on June 18, 2021. The chosen designers will be announced publicly in 2022 ahead of the product launch.

2 Cilantro Shrimp and Avocado Fajitas

This recipe is wonderful to serve for dinner or at a gathering. It is full of flavor, zest and protein, plus lots of fiber. Yet, it tastes as good as something you’d get at your favorite Mexican restaurant!
Serves: 4
½ pound of shrimp, deveined and pre-cooked
1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 medium diced peeled avocado
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup fresh or bottled salsa
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
8 (6-inch) whole grain tortillas or flatbread wraps
1 1/4 cups red bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch strips (about 1 pepper)
Lime wedges, for serving
Chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine shrimp, beans, and avocado. Season with pepper. In a separate bowl, stir together the salsa, cilantro, and lime juice. Toss shrimp mixture with 1/4 cup salsa mixture. Arrange 3–4 pepper strips in the center of each tortilla. Top with 1/2 cup of the shrimp-and-bean mixture. Place the tortillas on a pan in the oven for 15 minutes to warm. After removing, drizzle about 1 tablespoon of the salsa verde mixture over each taco. Serve with lime wedges and cilantro.

Make the world's creamiest pudding

I don't like to keep desserts in the house it makes it far too easy to give into stubborn sweet tooth cravings. Instead, I keep a few things on hand to whip up a healthy-ish, single-serve sweet like chocolate avocado pudding. Here's how to make it.

In a blender, combine 1/2 a ripe avocado, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of maple syrup, and 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk. Blend the mixture until smooth, transfer it to a bowl and top it with some unsweetened coconut flakes. Having to work for my sweets ensures that I'll only indulge if I really want it. Freezing Avocados

Sometimes you end up with too many deliciously ripe avocados and you'd like to preserve them for a later date. For long-term storage, freezing is the only effective method.

The National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP) recommends mashing ripe avocados into a puree prior to freezing because whole or sliced avocados do not freeze well. Add a tablespoon of lemon juice to every two avocados to preserve the color. Place in a plastic, zip-top bag and remove all of the air before sealing and freezing for up to three months. Defrost before using and use immediately to make guacamole or another dip, smoothie, avocado-based dressing, or simply use as a spread.

5. Avocado Chicken Salad

If you rarely roast a whole chicken because you don&rsquot know what you'd do with the leftovers, this chicken salad recipe may just give you the motivation. It&rsquos also great with leftover turkey!

First, here's how to roast the perfect chicken


1 c shredded cooked chicken
¼ c chopped grapes
3 Tbsp avocado mayo (recipe follows)
1 Tbsp chopped fresh tarragon
1 Tbsp toasted, salted pepitas or nuts
1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 green onion, thinly sliced
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. IN a medium bowl, mix the chicken, grapes, mayo, tarragon, pepitas, lemon juice, and green onion, and stir gently to coat. Add the salt and pepper to taste.
2. SERVE immediately, or cover and refrigerate up to overnight.

Avocado Mayo
Make your own egg-free avocado mayo to use in any recipes requiring mayonnaise (if you aren&rsquot just using mashed avocado in place of the mayo already!).


1 c avocado, fresh or frozen and defrosted
4 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
⅓ cup avocado oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

1. PULSE the avocado, lemon juice, and mustard in a food processor to combine. With the motor running, stream in the oil, stopping to scrape down the sides occasionally. The mixture will thicken and become lighter and creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste.
2. STORE the mayo in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days. The color may change a little, but the flavor should still be great.

How to make the perfect Avocado Toast

  1. Pick a great avocado. There is an art with how to pick a good avocado. I tend to buy my avocados rock hard so they can ripen on my own kitchen counter without anyone else touching them. When they are ready, they should just have the slightest give to them (check out how to cut and peel an avocado here)
  2. The bread matters. I prefer to use something thick and grainy. More flavor and substance to hold all that beautiful avocado.
  3. Chunky avocado vs smooth avocado… it’s really a personal decision but I prefer it mostly smooth with a few chunks. If it’s too chunky, I find that the avocado falls off and no one wants that.
  4. MALDON MALDON MALDON….always finish your avocado toast with a sprinkling of chunky salt. It bumps up the flavor in the best possible way and adds a bit of texture.
